Begegnungen

Jahrhundert.

Athletic in Ancient Cyprus and the Greek Tradition: 1500 BC - 330 AD

Clea C. Hadjistephanou

Kyproepeia, Cyprus, 2004, ISBN: 9963628400, pp.127, p/b, CY£10.50

Have you ever thought about athletes who participated in the Olympic Games in ancient times and their struggle to be there, but they had to travel from a place as far away as Cyprus? Well, this book comes at an appropriate time. It answers a number of questions on athletic life in general as it was manifested in ancient Cyprus, a crossroads of the then known world. This book, the first of its kind in Cyprus bibliography, deals with athletic life in ancient Cyprus over a long period of time, from its settlement by the Greeks in the 15th century BC until the end of the Roman period around 330 AD. This is an interesting period during which great historical events took place. In sports too, significant developments in ideas, the character and spirit of games, the running and function of "gymnasia" etc. Yet, as the author shows, athletics in Cyprus followed the tradition and developments of Greek athletics in general.
Clea C. Hadjistephanou, an academic and an active member of athletic life in Cyprus and Greece, has studied this period and presents her findings regarding a spectrum of themes such as, among others, sports grounds and officials, sport events and athletes, athletic prizes and contributors.

The Roads of Ancient Cyprus

Tonnes Bekker-Nielsen

Museum Tusculanum Press, University of Copenhagen, 2004, ISBN: 87-7289-965-5, pp. 307, 28 maps, h/b, d/j, CY£33.00

The earliest roads in Cyprus go back to The Bronze Age, and by the end of the Hellenistic period the road network encircled the entire Island. More roads were added and older roads rebuilt during the Roman period to serve the needs of the provincial administration as well as of the individual cities.

This book, the first on Its subject, traces the development of the Cypriot road network over a period of a thousand years, drawing on a combination of archaeological, epigraphic and literary sources. Separate chapters deal with travelers and life on the road, transport technology and the legal and administrative context of road building.

It is often assumed that the primary purpose of Roman road building was military domination, but, as this study demonstrates, road development in Cyprus is best understood in terms of communication between cities and their territories and the day-to-day exchanges between town and countryside.

Tonnes Bekker-Nielsen is a Senior Lecturer in Ancient History at the University of Southern Denmark, Esbjerg.
