Christoforos Savva (1924-1968) is one of the most ground-breaking Cypriot artist of the twentieth century. In a relatively short period of time he produced an impressive and extremely diverse body of works, ranging from the figurative paintings of the fifties to the abstract paintings, sculptures, experimentations with wire, cement, and leftovers from fabrics apart from forays in the field of furniture design and architectural interventions, in the sixties. In May 1960, Savva founded Apophasis (Decision), the first independent cultural centre of the then newly founded Republic of Cyprus, which was soon to become the epicentre of intellectual and cultural activity on the island. In 1968, Savva was one of the artists selected to represent Cyprus in its inaugural Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. However, a few weeks after the opening, he died suddenly in Sheffield, UK. With more than 150 images and texts by Jacobo Crivelli Visconti, Aram Moshayedi, Maria Panteli, and Polina Nikolaou, Christoforos Savva: Untimely on Time foregrounds the inclusive and idiosyncratic diversity of Savva’s work, while contributing to the crucial discussion on the multiplicity of artistic modernities, too often deterritorialized and neglected in dominant narratives.
