Antonio Mondaini, alias Namindio or Namindiù, is the author of the 14 manuscript letters written in Italian, in 1785, in Manon in Aix en Provence. Namindiùs’ remarkable knowledge of Cyprus is undoubtedly the greatest value of his work. Namindiù was a traveling philosopher and a keen observer, and was also a naturalist, a scientist, a geologist, an antiquarian, a man of letters and a poet. His greatest interest was Archaeology and therefore he describes in detail archaeological sites, presenting also the history of the place. But he also writes about his relations and experiences with the people, with whom he felt so close that he speaks as a Cypriot himself.The Cypriot countryside, the people and their habits are being described with the most brilliant colours and the author is always grateful for the good food offered by his hosts.This book is an extremely valuable tool, for all the new information given to us about Cyprus in the eighteenth century.
