Description

The book traces the history, architecture and art of the monastery complex of St John Lampadistes at Kalopanaghiotis. The complex includes the Byzantine katholikon (main church), dedicated to St Heraclidius, along with two other churches, those of Saint John Lampadistes and of the Akathistos Hymn. In these churches, Byzantine and post-Byzantine wall-paintings, dating from the 12th to the 16th century, have been preserved, together with noteworthy portable icons and woodcarving works. A glossary of terms allowing for a better understanding of the texts is also provided in tandem with selected bibliography. The monument is inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage site list.
