Description

” […] The opening chapters of the book give some general geophysical background to explain the oceanic origins of Troodos. The remainder of the book follows its title theme in a different way by sampling the ‘Sea to Summit’ geology and landscape of Troodos from Akrotiri to Olympus.

Although it would be possible to follow the described route and do the round trip in a day, that would be more like a motor rally than a pleasure outing. Apart from the need to get out of the car and look at the landscape in relation to the book, there are picturesque villages, monasteries and tiny churches as well as countless coffee shops and tavernas along the way. Therefore a stay of two or three days at somewhere such as Platres gives time to really explore Troodos and sample all it has to offer, including the Nature Trails laid out by the Forestry Department and the Cyprus Tourism Organisation.

In writing the book the author has tried to avoid the use of ‘geo-speak’ but there are some unavoidable geological terms and these are explained in context as well as in the book’s glossary. Moreover, the deliberate emphasis on sketches and diagrams throughout the book should help to make the text easier to digest. All the same, this is not a book for bedtime reading. Like any other guidebook it should spend a lot of its time out of doors, which in this case means on the Sea to Summit trail. If the booksucceeds in its aims it should offer its readers some fresh insights into the landscapes of its impressive region.”
