“This book is based mainly on photographs that have a more ‘personal’ connection with my twenty-years of excavation in Salamis. Thousands of such photographs, taken by friends and visitors from Famagusta, could not be retrieved, left behind in albums and cupboards when these people fled their homes in panic ahead of the invading tanks of the Turkish Army in the summer of 1974. So I have largely confined myself to my personal archive, and to that of the Department of Antiquities and the Public Information Office; I have also called upon the generosity of Reno Wideson who, as an official of the Public Information Office at that time, would often go to Salamis and take photographs of workers, visitors and statues…” – Vassos Karageorghis/Introduction
